Anchor Milk Signs Agreement with Milk Suppliers

New Zealand Milk Products Ethiopia, the producer of Anchor Fortified Milk Drink, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ethiopian Milk Suppliers Association to set up milk collection shed around the country. The agreement, part of the company’s corporate social responsibility program, is expected to help support domestic milk production and distribution. Worth an estimated five million Br, the deal will see New Zealand Milk Products provide equipment to build one milk collection center in Chancho area and training to milk producers to help improve transportation processes and raw milk collection.

Providing fortified and affordable milk to the local community is one of the biggest goals of the program the two organizations are undertaking. The company’s goal is to accomplish this while ensuring that the local farmers are compensated and trained, and that the local market is supplied.

Mebratu Melesse (PhD), Industry Ministry State Minister, said that the government’s commitment to both agriculture and nutrition would continue for the duration of GTP II and beyond. “Agriculture is a very important and significant part of the economy. Agri-processing also has the potential to become a huge sector for the Ethiopian economy.”

Anchor Milk’s parent company, Fonterra, is the provider of one third of the world’s milk products. The company is owned collectively by thousands of farmers in New Zealand.
