Authority Claims Half Billion Birr Contraband Seizures

The Ethiopian Revenue and Customs Authority (ERCA) claimed that it seized almost half a billion Birr in contraband during the first half of this fiscal year, a 33 million Br increase from last year’s reported seizure of 384 million Br.

Out of the total amount seized, 370 million Br in contraband was from imports coming in from different parts of the country, including Moyale, Hawassa, Jigjiga, Mele and Dire Dawa. The seized merchandise included clothing, electronics, tobacco, automobiles and food related items.

In addition, the remaining 47 million Br of contraband was from exports products such as gold, khat and black market currency. The exports were seized when they were going through airports, as well as checkpoints in border towns across the country.

In a bid to control the flow of contraband, the Authority has bought electronic scanning equipment this year, including two mobile cargo scanning machines, two relocatable cargo scanning machines, as well as 11 machines to scan products that go through airports.

The machinery was put in place in Metema and Humera last year, with the systems in Jigjiga and Togo Chale completed and ready for service as well.
