Authority Set to Improve Radiation Protection Safety

The Ethiopian Radiation Protection Authority (ERPA) says it is implementing various regulatory mechanisms to improve radiation protection and safety to prevent harm caused by radiation on people and the environment.

Speaking at two-day training on radiation protection and safety organized for senior health professionals, Authority director general, Abdurazaq Oumer said the Authority has been building institutional capacity in order to provide the necessary radiation prevention services. The Authority has also been striving to implement international radiation protection and regulatory principles.

Isotope Hydrology and Tracer Technique, Radiotherapy, Nuclear Density and Moisture Gauge Technique, Food Irradiation and Sterile Insect are among the radiation technologies adopted in Ethiopia.

“Despite all these benefits, the radiation would bring about great harm on humans and the environment unless proper and effective prevention mechanisms are put in place,” he said.

He further said that X-ray, which is a radiation used in medicine, should be a last option for diagnosing patients.

Authority radiation safety Notification & Information senior officer, Jemal Edris, on his part said after completing the training, the trainees would assist the Authority in the implementation of radiation regulatory mechanisms
