UAE Bans Meat Imports from Ethiopia

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has banned all meat imports from Ethiopia for an unlimited period of time. The ban was put in place by UAE, Ministry of Agriculture Thursday, following the discovery of meat cargo from Ethiopia which did not meet the standards of the country. Sources at the Ethiopian Ministry of Trade confirmed the introduction of the meat export ban to UAE, and preparation for negotiations towards solving the problem.

Fortune learned from a source at the Ethiopian Meat Exporters Association, who wishes to remain anonymous, that they had received a large order from Dubai-based importers, for a shipment to be delivered within a very short period of time. The exporters’ capacity was highly tested and some products may have ended up being exported without going through the standard quality assurance procedures.
