CHANGING YET CRITICAL

A year after Ethiopia faced the worst drought in its history, which put the lives of a staggering 10 million people in severe danger, the latest reports suggest that there are now some signs that the situation has improved.

Historically, Ethiopia’s climatic calamities have resulted in unprecedented global funding mobilisations, with “We are the World” and the like. Now, once more, the country is officially the leading top recipients of global response funding, with close to 900 million dollars coming through a humanitarian appeal crafted in March 2016.

This has come as the situation worsens, with the projection of negative impacts from La Niña – an extreme weather phenomena characterised by excessive flooding. This is expected to put close to two million people at risk and displace half a million. Though as many as 40 countries and various international aid organisations have extended a helping hand, the people’s suffering as a result of these catastrophic natural disasters continues with an underfunded response. Ethiopia has come a long way from the ‘biblical famines’ that plagued its people three decades ago, but still it remains in the grips of cyclic droughts.
