Dashen Brewery S.C has given 50 million Br for Bahir Dar International Stadium, which is going to be used to buy modern seating.
The money was given to the regional state Youth & Sports Affairs Bureau. The donation was received by the deputy head of the bureau, Muluadam Getahun. The stadium, located in the capital of Amhara Regional State, has reached about 90pc completion.
“This is one part of our comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program,” said Devlin Hainsworth, Dashen’s CEO . “Our total CSR spend is over half a billion in the past 16 years.” We want to make a difference in sport and leave a lasting legacy,” he added.
The 50 million Br donation was collected over a period of seven years and is equivalent to two birr for every crate of beer sold in that time period in Amhara Regional State, according to a mutual agreement between Dashen and the Bureau.
Dashen was one of the companies that suffered damage during the unrest in Amhara Regional State.
“Just like almost every other company, we were affected. The factory was even forced to stop work for a few days,” says Rita Tsehai, Dashen’s marketing manager. “However, Dashen is now back to working as normal.”
Dashen is one of seven breweries in Ethiopia, and one of the 20 local beer brands.
Ethiopia’s per capita consumption of beer stands at an estimated 10 litres per capita. In 2015, Dashen’s new brewery plant built at Debre Brehan boosted the total annual production capacity of the breweries in Ethiopia to around 10.8 million hectolitres. Heineken’s recent brewery expansion raised the figure to over 12 million hecto litres.
Dashen and BGI breweries are the second highest producers of beer in the country.
Dashen Breweries SC, which is owned by Tiret Corporate, began operations in 2000. It has a production capacity of three million hectolitres, a quarter of the country’s total production capacity. Four years ago, Duet, a UK investment company, bought a 51pc stake in Dashen. Duet is a global alternative asset manager founded in 2002 with over 2.4 billion dollars of equity. Tiret Corporate was established as an endowment organisation in 1995 in Bahir Dar with an initial capital reserve of 26.1 million Br.
