Draft Transport Policy Out for Consultation

The first draft of a policy that will address all modes of transport was put out on February 2, for discussion among stakeholders and experts in the field.

For the last three years, the draft has been worked on by the Ministry of Transport as well as consulting company, Afro Consult.

It comprises  three sections: the integrated transport policy, the draft aviation policy, and policy on human resource development. These entail various modes of transportation such as maritime, airfreight, rail and pipeline.

Vast infrastructure development projects have been undertaken so far, State Minister for Transport, Abdissa Yadeta said, and road and aviation networks will continue to be expanded. Extension of the railway lines is planned, he added. The policy is meant to make the various infrastructure-developing activities have higher standards of safety, quality, sustainability, cost efficiency, reliability, and cohesion. The draft will be put up for endorsement at the table of the Council of Ministers after similar consultative meetings in which the document will be enriched by stakeholder inputs.

Cross country integration can also be embarked upon by this policy, the State Minister added.
