EPRDF Wins 442 Seats in the Parliament

The Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) has bagged all the 23 seats Addis Abeba has in the federal Parliament, electoral officials disclosed today.

Prelimenary results of votes counted from national elections show that the EPRDF has so far won 442 of the 547 seats in Parliament, according to the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).

This leaves a balance of 105 seats yet to be tallied, while elections in three areas in Bonga of southern regioal states have been postponed following allegations made by Asheber W. Giorgis, a candidate who runs under a private platform.

Results from close to 28 seats in Oromia Regional State have yet to arrive, where the Oromo Peoples’ Democratic Organisation (OPDO) has reportedly took 150 of the 178 seats the region has in Parliament. The Gambela Peoples’ Democratic Movement (GPDM), an ally to the EPRDF, has won all the three seats, electoral officials say.

The Southern Ethiopian Peoples’ Democratic Movement (SEPDM), where PM Hailemariam hails, has taken 95 of the 123 seats; and in  Tigray Region, the TPLF is pronounced to have taken 31 of the 38 seats. In Amhara region, the incumbent Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM), took 107 of the 138 seats, while the regional ally of the EPRDF in Afar Region, the Afar Peoples’ Democratic Organization (APDO), won six of the eight seats, electoral officials disclosed.

A result is yet to arrive to show if there is any contending party other than the EPRDF and its regional allies which has won any seat.
