Ethiopia to Tackle Livestock Diseases with €9m from FAO

A project organized by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) is to pursue pastoral resilience through improved animal health service delivery in pastoral areas of Ethiopia by Improved Animal Health Service Delivery- peste des petits ruminants (PPR) project that was launched on February 23, 2015 at InterContinental Addis Hotel.

In the opening speech of the event, FAO’s representative Susan Minae said that even though Ethiopia constitutes huge farm animal resources, sheep and goats being its major livestock species, their impact on food security and livelihoods has been constrained mainly due to epizootic diseases. Among these diseases, sheep and goat plague known peste des petits ruminants (PPR) can infect 90pc of the animal heard once introduced, which threatens 45 million animals in Ethiopia.

MoA’s Livestock Resource Development Sector of Animal Health Directorate secured 9.3 million euros to implement a progressive control program for PPR in pastoralist areas of Ethiopia from 2014 to 2017, according to Susan.

The project is to build the capacity of veterinary services of Ethiopia and to implement a progressive control program for PPR.
