The Ethiopian Idol was a breakthrough in the competition of talented musicians and dancers in Ethiopia when it was broadcast by the state owned Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), then known as Ethiopian Television (ETV). Then came different talent shows where competitors performed for an audience and evaluators. Sertse Firesebhat and Yeshi Demelash, two judges of the Ethiopian Idol show, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Broadcast Service (EBS), an American based TV station and Debol Multimedia are launching a new vocal competition called Merewa which is to be completed in a six month period. The new talent competition will start by the end of March and is said to be like The Voice.
