Ezana Mining Begins Pilot Production

Ezana Mining Development, a private company, has started a pilot production in its newly built plant in Tigray Regional State.

The plant is located in Asegde Tsimbila Wereda, North Tigray Zone and was constructed by Mesfin Industrial Engineering at a cost of 700 million Br. The factory has the capacity of producing 4.5kg of gold in a day.

The company will create jobs for over 200 people when it becomes fully operational. Founded in 1990’s, with a capital of 14 million Br, Ezana is affiliated with Endowment Fund for Rehabilitation of Tigray (EFFORT). It has conducted mining exploration for more than two decades.

Last year, the export earnings made from gold was at 291 million dollars, which is nine percent lower than of the preceding fiscal year.

There are four gold mining companies an extraction license, while there are more than 80 companies that are in an exploration state, according to the latest reports of Ethiopia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EEITI).
