Japanese Officials, Companies Visits Ethiopia

A Japanese delegation consisting of four ministers, 15 private companies and four governmental institutions led by Ishihara Hirotaka, Japan’s Parliamentary vice-minister for Foreign Affairs, visited Ethiopia from August 24 to 26, 2014.

The private companies, from sectors such as trading, leather, machinery, electronics, construction, law and finance, were among the delegation. Mitsubishi and Toyota Tsusho, major global car producers; the Sumitomo Corporation, which is engaged in Metal Production, Transportation, Construction Systems, Infrastructure, Mineral Resources, Energy, Chemical and Electronics, and BMC International, which is known for manufacturing fiscal cash registers and fiscal printers, as well as other giant Japanese companies, are included in the delegation.

This visit follows the bilateral summit between the two countries led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn, held during the visit in January, 2014. The visit by the delegations is expected to improve the economic relations between Japan and Ethiopia. Japanese-based leather producing factory, Hiroki Co. Ltd, already start investing in Ethiopia last year with initial capital of close to 10 million Br. It is the first Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) to Ethiopia in the leather industry.

Ethiopia and Japan have enjoyed friendly relations dating back to the 1930s.
