MANY MODES

Four wheeled vehicles are by no means the only transportation option in Ethiopia. In some instances, particularly in rural areas, there are no wheels at all. Sometimes there is the combination of four legs and wheels as seen in this donkey cart in Assosa, west Benishangul Gumuz. This type of cart, called a garri in the Amharic language, is used to carry load and people. So is the three-wheeled bajaj driving down the road in the foreground. These nifty little vehicles usually carry three, four people and can also carry amazing loads. They are fragile though, amidst heavy vehicular traffic. But they are popular forms of low cost transportation, which are sometimes turned around by hand, to get out of tight parking spaces.
