A blazing fire rages at Merkato, the largest open market in Ethiopia, consuming considerable assets of traders. The fire broke out at the place popularly known as Shera Terra at around 3:00pm today.
Fire fighting brigades of the Addis Abeba Fire & Emergency Prevention and Rescue Agency are struggling to control the blaze that, according to eye witnesses, has injured two individuals. The eye witnesses told Fortune that those injured suffered from smoke inhalation.
The blaze is seen consuming items sold in the area, and some eye witnesses say that the fact that edible oil is sold there has made the fire worse. No official statement has yet been issued. But the area is swarmed with law enforcement officials and fire fighters.
