Ministry Cuts Malpractice in Trade Process

The Ministry of Trade (MOT) announced that it has driven 3,865 wholesalers out of the market for avoiding participation in the supply of sugar and edible oil. With the prices of these staples, including wheat flour fixed by government, the wholesalers claim their profit margin is too low.

In response, the Ministry is preparing to install an electronics system to improve the complicated process of purchasing these basics.

MOT also states that to improve good governance in this sector it has removed 33 managers for abuse of power, collusion with brokers to change the fixed price, damaging scales and accepting bribes.

Importing sub-par items, doing business without appropriate licences, holding back basic items to create scarcity and push up prices, and diluting food products with unknown substances, are among the offences listed by the Ministry as it penalised 150 companies engaged in such practices by shutting them down.
