Ministry Makes $17M from Agricultural Exports

The Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed that exports of agricultural products has yielded an income of 17 million dollars in the first three months of the current fiscal year.

Oilseeds and live animals are the commodities, which are exported to other parts of the world.

Israel and Egypt were the major importers of the products.

In previous years, the volatile price of sesame on the world market has adversely impacted the earnings made from agriculture.

Total export proceeds from agricultural products totalled 2.1 billion dollars, in 2015/16 dropping by 3.5 pc compared to the previous fiscal year. This is largely due to a decline in export earnings from coffee by 57.8 million dollars, oilseeds by 31.4 million dollars and khat by 10 million dollars, owing to a fall in the international prices of coffee and oilseeds.

Oilseed accounted for 22pc of the total merchandise exports in 2015/16, up four percent relative to the previous budget year.
