Mobile Users Surpasses 50m

ethio telecom has reported that the number of mobile subscribers has reached 53 million through out the country. This is 11pc higher than the preceding fiscal year. The company also announced that it has earned 12 billion Br in the first six months of the current fiscal year. The figure is 17pc higher than the similar period last year. This is achieved in a year where the internet connection was closed for months.

Since the leak of the university entrance exam in July 2016, the government shut down internet services for some time. The shutdown at first targeted only social media users in the country, then after a deadly stampede during the annual Irrecha, the ban expanded to include all internet services.

In Ethiopia, about one quarter of mobile subscribers use internet and data users. The ownership of smart phones is below five percent.

The provision of mobile service has begun in 1999 with a capacity of 36,000 lines in Addis Abeba. The company has a target to earn 40 billion Br during the current fiscal year. Meanwhile, the number of subscribers are expected to reach 64 million.
