Nation Outperforms City in Reducing HIV Rate

Addis Abeba, has seen 0.14pc of its population infected with HIV in nine months, data from the City Administration show. This rate of infection is higher than the national rate, which stands at 0.03pc.

Close to 5,000 people in the city’s estimated population of 3.3 million contracted HIV in the first in this fiscal year.

There was a plan to reduce new HIV infections from 0.28pc in 2010 to 0.14pc in 2015 nationally. But the country managed to reduce new infections to 0.03pc, exceeding the target.

The City Administration’s report shows that a total of 81,340 people living with HIV have received Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART) in the reporting period. Of these, 1,055 were pregnant women.

At the national level new HIV infections have been projected to reach 14,405 by the end of 2016, according to the National AIDS Resource Center.
