New Blood for Federal Courts

Parliament has approved the appointment of 111 judges for federal courts, the largest number of appointees since 2010.

The judges took their oath in the presence of the Peoples Representatives this morning.

The appointments include those of President and Vice President of the Supreme Court.

Former Chief Justice, Tegene Getaneh, due to health reasons, exited the first post, leaving it vacant for months. His Vice President, Medihin Kiros, too, will be retiring at the end of the fiscal year.

Dagne Melaku, 53, and Tsegaye Asemamaw 45, both with almost two decades of experience as judges will serve as President and Vice President of the Supreme Court.

The office told Fortune that the screening process of close to 3,000 applicants took more than a year.
