New Traffic Rules Aim to Tame Unruly City Streets

The Federal Transport Authority (FTA) will begin enforcing new regulations for traffic police, pedestrians, and drivers.

The regulation focuses on the discipline of traffic police, pedestrians and drivers as well as the conditions for the revocation and suspension of licenses to reduce the growing number of traffic accidents.

Major penalties include the revocation and suspension of drivers’ licenses for one to two years based on the offenses. Fines will range from between 40 Br and 7000 Br.

“The community has to be aware of what the regulation is about and what is expected of them, ” said Gizaw Dagnew, head of communications of the FTA.

The regulation was endorsed by the Council of Ministers last month. Last year, over 20, 000 traffic accidents took place in the city, causing around 400 deaths.
