Zone Selects 10m for Transplantation

Ten million select coffee seedlings have been prepared for transplantation in West Hararge Zone, Oromia Regional State in an effort to expand coffee development, the zonal agriculture development office said.The seedlings will be transplanted on 7,117ha of land, said, Manbegrot Kebede, a coffee expert with the office.The expert said the area of land covered with coffee plantation will grow to 82,000ha from 75,000ha following the transplantation of the seedlings.

MoA to Dispose 450tn of Pesticides

The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) said some 450tn of expired pesticides will be disposed until May 31, 2013. Three hundred tonnes of pesticides have already been sent to France and Sweden and the remaining will be sent to Belgium until May 31, 2013, according to Shemelis Hassen, directorate coordinator of Ministry East African Stockpiles. The stocks were collected over the last 15 years, mainly from Tigray, Oromia and Afar regions as well as Addis Ababa. This project is a continuation of two projects that took place 10 years ago where 2,600tn of pesticides were disposed.

CONSTRUCTION

Construction of Five Health Facilities Near Completion

Construction of five health facilities is underway in YirgachefeWereda, Gedeo Zone of South regional State with 40 million Br. So far construction of three of the facilities has been finalised said Office Head, Elias Gute. Construction of the facilities will increase the total number of health stations to eight according to Elias. In addition, the upgrading of a health station to a hospital level launched with 20 million Br is nearing completion, he said.

Construction of Manufacturing, Display Centres Progressing

Construction of 36 manufacturing and display centres launched in Amhara State with 200 million Br is well in progress, according to the regional Micro & Small-scale Enterprises Development Agency. The centres are being constructed in main towns in the region with the budget allocated by the government, according to Agency Deputy Director, Telayneh Wubneh. The Director said the centres will offer relevant training, facilitate technology transfer and create market ties.

Southern Region Collects 1.2b Br Revenue

Close to 1.2 billion Br revenue was collected in Southern Regional State during the last six months, the regional revenue authority said. The amount exceeds that of the same period last year by 318 million Br, according to Mesfin Moges, planning, monitoring and evaluation work process representative with the Authority. The growth in the revenue is a result of the implementation of an efficient tax collection system and tax reform program, he said. The amount was collected from direct and indirect taxes as well as municipality services.

Bahir Dar Collects 229m Br Revenue

Close to 229 million Br revenue was collected from different income titles in Bahir Dar Town, Amhara Regional State during the first half of the current fiscal year.The set target was to collect 333 million Br during the reported period, according to Kibret Mohammed office manager. The revenue will be used to construct roads, educational and health facilities, among others, in the town.

Close to 27,000 Tourists Visit Sanctuaries

The Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA) earned 18.5 million Br from local and international visitors. However, the Authority did not achieve the 24 million Br it planned to obtain in the first half of this budget year due to the international economic crisis and seasonal fluctuation of tourists. Out of the expected 53,000 international tourists 16,911 have visited the sanctuaries. Out of the expected 36,000 local tourists 10,490 have visited the sanctuaries.

Amhara Region Collects 298,100 Taxpayers’ Fingerprints

Amhara Regional State Branch Office of the Ethiopian Revenue & Customs Authority (ERCA) said it has managed to collect fingerprints of 298,000 tax payers over the past two years. The Office has managed to collect the fingerprints of taxpayers in 14 towns in the region, Asmamaw Maru, office director said. Close to 192,800 of the stated number of tax payers are business persons while the rest are civil servants and students of governmental universities enrolled in cost sharing programs.
