Political Unrest Effects Linger on Tourism

The political unrest has been affecting not only the revenues, but the expenses of the tourism sector, according to a report from the Ethiopian Tourism Organization. Tour companies, which used to account for 70pc of the general expenses of the tourism industry, now only account for 50pc. The effect was attributed to the political unrest.

The Report also stated that the country is not making the money that it should from the tourism sector. The report was presented during the 4th general assembly of the Tourism Transformation Council. The Council, which is chaired by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, attributed the weaknesses in the industry to the institutional incapability of the enterprises involved in the sector. The Council also criticised the industry for its inability to use up to date technology.

The Council also launched the Amharic version of its Brand “Land of Origin” during the assembly.
