Pumps on at Total Ethiopia’s Dukem Depot

Total Ethiopia inaugurated its fuel depot in Dukem – a small town, some 37km south of the capital in Oromia Regional State – on September 22, 2016.

The depot, which is also strategically located on the new railway line, has more than an eight million litre fuel storage capacity, where the minimum official requirement is only half a million litres. It also stores 100 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The Dukem Total Ethiopia depot includes an electronically-operated LPG cylinder filling plant and an ethanol blending facility.

Total Ethiopia has invested more than 270 million Br and created over a 100 direct and indirect jobs during the construction of the depot.

“Total Ethiopia is a market leader energy supplier in the country,” Lassina Tour, managing director of Total Ethiopia, said. “We will provide a safe and more reliable supply of products to the country.”

Total Ethiopia has invested almost one billion birr to develop new service stations, consumer facilities and aviation depots over the past five years in Ethiopia.

“The new depot reduces the fuel supply chain constraints, while enhancing the future development of the energy sector in Ethiopia,” said Tollosa Shagi, Minister of Mines, Natural Gas and Petroleum, at the inauguration ceremony. “It will bring great benefit to the economic development of the country.”

The depot was constructed on 5.5ha of land.

“The depot complies with national and international standards and we have included a Programmable Logic Control (PLC) system,” Jerome Dechamps, a senior Total marketing and service executive, said. “This system allows for the automated control and monitoring of daily operations.”

As part of Total Ethiopia’s corporate social responsibility commitments, it is helping to combat malaria and providing renewable energy technologies.

“Our operations in more than 130 countries worldwide consistently deliver economic, social and environmental benefits,” Jerome added.

“The Oromia Regional Government keenly supports investments,” the coordinator of sectorial offices and adviser to the Oromia State’s president, Teshome Mossisa, said.

“Total built the depot as an investor, but the people of Ethiopia are the owners of it,” Dr. Major Athlete Haile Gebresilassie, brand ambassador of Total Ethiopia, noted.

Total Ethiopia works as the official sponsor of the Great Ethiopian Run, which was founded by the legendary middle distance runner.

Today, Total Ethiopia has five depots – in Akaki, Bole, Meqelle, Bahir Dar and now Dukem – and 170 service stations across the country. These operations have created more than 8,000 jobs, with more than 500 fuel trucks transporting 700 million litres of fuel a year.

Total Ethiopia was established in 1950 as a petroleum product distribution company. In Africa, Total is active in the petroleum product supply chain in more than 40 countries. Approximately 1.6 million customers are served every day at 4,200 Total service stations in Africa. Total is a global energy producer and provider, with 100,000 employees globally.
