Rise in Landlessness Endangers Rural Farmers, Lives

A thematic study sponsored by the Forum of Social Studies, a non profit institution that conducts policy research, under the theme ”Land, Landlessness and Poverty in Ethiopia”, conducted in the Amhara, Tigray, Oromia and SNNP regional states, indicates that landlessness has become an overarching problem.

Urbanisation, industrialisation and the growing sub-divisions of plots in response to the increase in population are the major reasons for the increase in landlessness, according to the study.

The research also found that the population pressure in these four regions makes poverty and vulnerability acute, leaving farmers’ rights to land under threat.

Between 20 and 30pc of people in the Amhara region are landless – this figure is also applicable for the other three regions, the study added.

Land legislation policy, population pressure, land certification, land scarcity and access to natural resources are also areas investigated in the study, The workshop was held on July 12,2016 at Desalegn Hotel
