Roads Authority Gives Out 1.3b Br contracts

The Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) gave 1.3 billion Br contracts on Thursday, November 1, 2012, to two local and a Chinese company for a total of 85kms of road construction in Oromia, Somali and Tigray regional states.

The largest contract of 869.5 million Br has gone for the shortest road, 22km from Chole to Magna in the Arsi Zone of Oromia, to be constructed by the CGC Overseas Construction Group LTD (CGCOC), a Chinese company which has been operating in Ethiopiasince 2003. This road will traverse three weredas.

This road project is part of the route that links Dera- Mechara road, which is under construction. The route will also provide access to major agricultural products, especially coffee from Magna, a well known coffee growing area to the central market.   The construction will be supervised by Road Design Development Consulting Company.

Rama Construction, a local company, will get 516.5 million Br for the 23km road from Tsegede junction to Ketema Nigus in north-western Tigray. The company, established 16 years ago, is currently working part of the Adama- Addis toll road.

The new road, which is to be upgraded from gravel, will be connected to the Adiremet-Dejena-Dasha and Sanja-Kirakir roads, which are currently under construction. The road passes dominantly through mountainous and escapement terrain especially the first 11km. The remaining section traverses through rolling to flat terrain. Cone Abe Consulting, a local company, will supervise the construction.

Dano Construction & Commercial & Industry PLC, another local company, will take 203.3 million Br for the 35.87km Shebele – Imi road project in theSomaliRegionalState. The work also includes construction of minor and major drainage structure. Two-Three Consulting Engineers will supervise the construction.

The Authority covers the entire budget for all the roads, which are expected to be completed in two years’ time, of which Zaid Woldegebriel, director general of the ERA, expressed confidence during the signing ceremony.
