Russians Eying Trade, Energy in Ethiopia

Russians have shown interest to cooperate with Ethiopia on a wide variety of sectors, including trade and energy. The Russians expressed their interest during the Intergovernmental Ethio-Russia Joint Commission on Economic, Scientific, Technical and Trade Cooperation technical experts review meeting.

“ Our forthcoming discussions are intended to explore new ideas of cooperation,” senior energy analyst at the Ministry of Water, Irrigation & Energy (MoWIE), Sahele Tamiru said.

He further said that the major areas of cooperation covered in these negotiations span a wide variety of interests including trade, agriculture, energy, mineral, transport and education, among others.

“We are here to take stock of the progress made so far in their implementation and find means of speeding up the process,” Sahle added.

Asian and African Directorate director in the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, Nailya Chernikova, on her part said the Russian delegation will sign inter-ministerial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with its Ethiopian counterpart. The former is drawn from different ministries and agencies. There are also representatives of Russian companies which have strong interest to make business in Ethiopia.
