State of Emergency Achieves Target: Negeri

Negeri Lencho (PhD), minister of Government Communication Affairs office, in a press conference held on Friday January 4, said that the state of emergency has met its targets since it was announced four months ago.

However, Negeri did not make clear the government’s decision whether or not to extend the state of emergency.

The government declared a state of emergency following violent anti-government protests in Amhara and Oromia Regional States. Since then, the Command Post has reported that over 11,000 people were arrested nationwide, while an equivalent number were released after counseling and briefings. According to the original plan the state of emergency will be concluded in the next two months.

“The state emergency will be lifted based on the assessment of the parliament,” said Negeri. Apart from state of emergency, Negeri also discussed the current status of the Ethiopian Shipping & Logistics Services Enterprise (ESLSE), although he did not elaborate on the selling process.

“We have already decided to sell either a full or a partial stake in ESLSE,” Negeri added.
