In a country where the sporting psyche is dominated by football and athletics, the reception for the newcomer, skateboarding, is overwhelming. There was a large crowd at the Addis Skate Park – built in collaboration with Make Life Skate Life, a non-profit organisation that works with local skateboarding communities around the world, and Ethiopia Skate – situated behind Laphto mall. Last Sunday, Malta Guinness and Ethiopia Skate held a skateboarding competition in this 600 sqm concrete skatepark. The competition consisted of 15 skaters. Pictured is “babure”, who got his name after his performances since the opening of the skatepark back in April. Babure and his colleagues’ performances were encouraging.
