World Bank Managing Director to Visit Ethiopia

The World Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer Sri Mulyani Indrawati is expected to arrive in Ethiopia today, September 14, 2014, for a three-day visit.

The visit is part of the World Bank Groups’ efforts to further strengthen the Bank’s partnership with Ethiopia, according to a press release from the Bank. Indrawati is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn and other ministers to discuss opportunities and challenges the country is currently facing. Indrawati will also meet with representatives of the donor community, the private sector, civil society and the media.

The director will assess firsthand how World Bank supported projects are benefiting the poor and contributing to Ethiopia’s economic transformation, said the press release. She is scheduled to visit several sites. Indrawati will meet implementers and beneficiaries of projects promoting productive safety nets and improving urban local government development.

According to her bio at the World Bank site, Indrawati joined the World Bank in June 2010. Before that she used to be Indonesia’s minister of finance and the coordinating minister of economic affairs. She has also been Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund, faculty member at the University of Indonesia and Visiting Professor at Georgia State University in the US. She holds a PhD in economics from the University of Illinois and a BA in economics from the University of Indonesia.
