African Union’s Demand Met by Burkina Faso Military, Partially

The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), on its 544th meeting held on September 18, 2015 adopted a decision on the situation of Burkina Faso.  The decision has 20 points mainly focused on call for status quo ante expressing deep concerns, passing condemnations and demands along with consequential punitive measures.

The meeting called to pass a decision was prompted by the prevailing situation in Burkina Faso, marked by the kidnapping and unlawful detention, since 16th September 2015, of the President of the Transition, Mr. Michel  Kafando, the transitional Prime Minister, Mr. Yacouba Isaac Zida and some members of the government. The action faced total rejection as unconstitutional change of Government, which is one of the pillars of AU as a new entity from its predecessor OAU.

According to the communiqué demand No 10, which called for immediate and unconditional release of the President of the Transition and other members of the government, the Military had released the interim President Michel Kafando but kept the Prime Minister Isaac Zida under house arrest.
