Diaspora Business Forum Awards Pioneer Businesspersons

Diaspora Business Forum awarded two Diaspora pioneer businesspersons, Dr. Akeza Teame, and Tamrat Bekele at its first award event held at Sheraton Addis. It also recognised Ambassador Girma Birru as Diaspora Business Champion of the Year. Tamrat Bekele is Chief Executive Officer of International Clinical Laboratories (ICL), which provides medical laboratory services. It was established in 2004. It employs 185 persons and its current capital is 2.5 billion dollars.

ICL wanted to bring a centralised laboratory system but it took 11 years before the Ministry of Health could resolve that challenge. The other awarded Diaspora investor is Akeza Teame (MD), medical director of the American Medical Centre and co-founder of Saint Yared General Hospital. Engaging around 250 employees, the investment capital of the two currently reached 50 million Br.

Importation of medical items and Customs duties were challenges identified by recipients
