Destruction, Looting

A wave of attacks, at various levels of intensity, kicked off on Monday across many parts of the Oromia Regional State. This came after a large number of deaths occurred at a traditional thanksgiving event in the town of Bishoftu (Debrezeit) on October 2, 2016. A reported 55 people died after a stampede triggered by tear gas shots fired by the region’s law enforcement force.

It was on the same day that the Prime Minister expressed his condolences, while praising the regional police and special forces responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the million plus people in attendance at the festival.

It was this same force that most businesses had expressed disappointment towards.

The regional police disclosed on October 6, 2016, that the degree of damage in Sebeta Woreda had impacted 11 factories, while close to 60 vehicles also attacked. Though the nature of the attacks ranged from total destruction to systematic looting, and in some instances physical attacks on personnel, on large scale investments.

The destruction and looting still continues across different parts of the region. The week’s heavy arms of the chaos hit lodges on the shores of Langano in Arsi Negele Woreda.
