Addis to Get 50 Bus Shelter Stations

WT&T Construction Company is building 50 bus shelters in Addis Abeba under a five million Birr contract with the Transport Program Management Office.  The design of the shelters is done by Ethiopian Institute of Architectural Building Construction (EiABC).

Three shelters at Torhailoch, Zenebe Work and Gerji is already underway. Each shelter, resting on a five metre by 1.5m land includes seats and advertising light boxes. areas are selected on the basis of the number people using public transportation.

Bidders for this project included three local contractors, WT&T Construction Company, Kayssaye Yoseph Construction, a BC-3 contractor and Mulu Hadog Construction, as well as three international contractors, including Zhongmei Engineering Group ltd from China, Kis Construction from the US. The project is financed by the Addis Abeba Transport Bureau.

WT & T 3 Grade Construction Plc’s, established in 2009, was selected with a score of 88pc in the technical and financial evaluations. Its financial offer was the lowest at 4.9 million Br. the company has constructed buildings for offices and stores, the pharmaceuticals fund & supply agency and built hospital in Guder, oromiya regional state.

“These new shelters are designed to serve all public transport users,” says Yeheyies Girmasellasie, Pedestrian & Public Transport division head. “It is a good advantage for the residents of Addis Abeba, especially for the elderly to have a station as the temperature is increasing and this makes waiting for transport on the streets without shelters difficult”.

Fortune spoke with Endeshaw Mulugeta, 45, while he was waiting for a bus from Gerji to Bole.

“Although we need a long lasting solution for transport shortage; this also partly helps at least to wait safely,” he commented.
