City Administration Bureaus: Moving In Moving Out

The Addis Abeba City Administration is moving six bureaus from the municipality building in Piazza and other facilities in the city to two new 13-storey (G+12) buildings.

One of the buildings, built for the Sport Commission, is located around Amest Kilo alongTewodros Streetin Arada District. The other, built for the Education Bureau, is located at Jan Meda, alongRussia Street, also in Arada District. They were built with the same design at a cost of 56 million Birr and 63 million Birr, respectively, according to Teketel Tekle, Finance and Property Administrator of the Commission.

Both buildings are still empty, but theCapacityBuildingand Civil Service bureaus will be the first to move in to the building located around Amest Kilo on October 23, 2012. They will occupy the eighth to 12th floors. Moving in and joining them from other buildings in town will be the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) Agency, which will occupy the sixth and seventh floors, and Women, Children and Youth Bureau, which will occupy the first three floors. The Sport Commission will also move out of its current rented offices and move into the third to fifth floors on October 30, 2012. The Commission has been paying 84,000Br monthly rent.

The Jan Meda building will welcome the Addis Abeba Education Bureau, which will occupy the first five floors, and the Housing Construction Development Bureau, which will occupy the remaining eight floors. The two will move by the end of October 2012.

The office change particularly from the municipality building, according to Girma Beka, Change Implementer and Change Team leader at the Capacity Building Bureau, is because of administrative rearrangement, which will see other bureaus moving into the space that will be vacated.

Accordingly, the Addis Abeba Land Administration, which is currently based in the Fire, Emergency Prevention and Control Agency’s building, and the newly established Intellectual Property Bureau will move to the municipality building.

TheSportCommissionBuildingis erected at a site where its old office was located. It has stayed in the rented facilities while construction of the new building had been going on for two years by Giga Construction Plc in a contract signed in November 2010. The Jan Meda building was constructed by AMB Construction.
