Cold Room for Plant Genes Inaugurates

A Plant Gene Bank Cold Room, housed at the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute (EBI) and built for 400,000 Euros, was inaugurated last week.

During the inauguration, the Minister for the Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Gemedo Dalle, said managing biodiversity genes plays a pivotal role in boosting green economy and enhancing ecological protection.

The installation of the plant gene bank, which was financed by German government was completed in March 2018.

The support will give Ethiopia the opportunity to achieve its green and resilient economy for sustainable agricultural productivity, said, Friedrich Wacker, German Food & Agriculture minister.

Ethiopia Gene Bank was established forty years ago. The bank is at the forefront of Ethiopia’s battle with climate change and ensuring food security while safeguarding the country’s agricultural diversity.
