Construction of New Autism Facility Launched

A cornerstone was laid for a new autism treatment centre, the Nia Foundation’s 300 million Br Joy Autism Centre, on March 23, 2017, by Abdulfatahi Abdullahi, minister of Labour and Social Affairs. The centre, which is the first residential autism treatment facility in Ethiopia, is located in the CMC area. Construction is expected to be completed in five years.

The center will cover 4,624 sqm of land, donated by the Addis Abeba City Administration, and will be funded through donors and partners. It will provide services such as physiotherapy, specialized medical treatment, a research centre and school, as well as dormitories and a cinema for residential students, in various buildings on the grounds. Additional plots of land are also planned for playgrounds and additional classrooms.

“The target of the residential facilities when it is complete will be to serve children with autism who have no parents, or who come from single parent households,” Zemi Yenus, the founder of Nia told Fortune.
