Corporation Cancels Two Sugar Factories

The Sugar Corporation has discarded plans to build two sugar factories from the promised list of ten. The initial plan was to construct five factories under the Kuraz sugar project and develop 150,000 hectares of sugar cane farms. However, the corporation has decided to cancel the construction of one of the factories and continue building the rest.

Out of the targeted 150,000 hectares of land to be developed, the plans for 50,000 hectares were cancelled.

In addition, the corporation’s plans for the construction of three factories at Beles with the capacity of growing 75,000 hectares of sugarcane was reduced to two factories on 50,000 hectares of land.

The corporation explained the cancellation of some of the construction plans in Kuraz and Belas factories due to lack of funds.

Recently the corporation refurbished five factories and announced the launch of two more factories: Arjo Dedassa and Kessem.

The current annual domestic production of sugar is 6.5 Million quintals.

The corporation was established six years ago, with the aim of boosting the country’s sugar production.
