Fast Growing Nation Celebrates Population Day

Ethiopia’s population remains to be one of the fastest-growing around the world, accelerating at three percent annually, according to Gillian Mellsop, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Representative to Ethiopia.

If it continues at this rate, Ethiopia will be a country of 200 million people in the next three decades, according to Mellsop, who spoke on the World Population Day that was celebrated in Ethiopia on July 11 with the theme of ‘family planning is a human right’.

Getachew Adem, deputy commissioner of the National Planning Commission, told the gathering that Ethiopia has been providing family planning through 40,000 health extension workers. The effort showed a significant progress in reducing the average number of children a woman bears from 6.4 to 4.6 in the past two decades.

Ethiopia, with the population of over 100 million people, is the second most populous nation in Africa following Nigeria.
