Maraki library, located in one of the university's campus will soon be benefited from the network infrastructure the University is undertaking.
The University of Gonder(UoG) is undertaking seven ICT projects with 164.1 million Br to fulfill its E-University target.
The Ministry of Education (MoE) provided 161.2 millionBr.The Centre for Disease Control (CDC), which has a 500,000 dollar budget for a five-year collaboration with the University on HIV, contributed two million Birr, and the University Leadership Management & Capacity Development (LMCD) Project of the Government of theNetherlandscontributed 960,000Br.
The ongoing ICT projects, which began in September 2012 by UoG’s staff, include network infrastructure, active network device supply installation, unified communication system, cloud data center, wireless Local Area Network (LAN) installation and video conference system for tele-medicine and distance learning application.
The Atse Fasil and Atse Tewodros campuses will get network infrastructure, active network device supply installation and unified communication system for 9.3 million Br, 70 million Br and 6.5 million Br, respectively.
These two campuses, with 9,000 students, are considered the main campuses of the UoG, hence the larger investment, according to Surafel Ingidaw, UoG’s ICT Director.
Maraki campus is getting a 5.3 million Br network infrastructure.
The network infrastructure will interconnect the various buildings of the university, including offices, labs, class rooms and the library. Virtualisation software and centralised storage will be installed for cloud data centre infrastructure, cloud computing and capacity servers. Indoor-outdoor and mesh-door network will also be installed, on the other hand, for wireless access to the LAN.
The project includes 235 IP phones together with voice mails and other accessories. IP phone is a form of voice communications in which voice is converted in to digital data packets and sent over the Internet.
The video conferencing will have Smart Classrooms and Meeting Hall for Tele-Medicine and Tele-Health Internet Protocol Television (IPTV).
The UoG has also plans to implement Enterprise Resource Planning Software for the next fiscal year.
The University, originally a medical college, has 25,000 students in four campuses. Currently the UoG has five campuses, including the Agricultural campus, named after the late Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi. They are Atse Fasil, Atse Tewodros, Maraki and thecollegeofMedicineand Health Sciences.
These campuses have schools of Technology, Education and Law, as well as faculties of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Social Science and Humanity, Business and Economics, and Natural Science and Computation.
The Data centre of the university is installed at a cost of 27 million Br.
