An Italian firm, Studio Pietrangeli Consulting Engineers, was awarded a contract to conduct a reconnaissance, feasibility studies and to prepare the design for Dabus Hydropower Project in Benishangul Gumuz Regional State and is expected to generate 326MW of electric power.
Pietrangeli secured the contract for 1.12 million Euros and an additional 3.4 million Br to deliver the product in three phases.
Contract payments will be made in three stages including a reconnaissance, feasibility and design phases, according to Getu Tilahun, Director for Hydropower Studies at the Ministry of Water, Irrigation & Electricity (MoWIE). The firm has already completed geological, geotechnical, hydrological, socioeconomic and environmental assessments and topographic surveys for the project.
Ethiopia has 13 hydroelectric dams that generate 89.6pc of the total 4,238MW of electric power output in the country.
