Nation Strides to Legalise Ecosystem Payment

The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MEFEC) is finalising legal a framework to initiate a new program, payments for the ecosystem (PES).

Sustainable land and financial management through responsible environmental governance and creation of diverse possibilities for wage earning is the aim, according to Gemedo Dalle (PhD), minister of MEFEC.

A discussion with stakeholders to implement a strategic road-map for PES was held last week. Through the United Nation’s Development Programme’s (UNDP) project ‘Mainstreaming Incentives for Biodiversity Conservation in the Climate Resilient Green Economy Strategy (CRGE), a feasibility study result was presented by  Giacomo Cozzolino, the author, early last week.

The study results and recommendations along with feedbacks received are expected to be presented to the Council of Ministers for ratification.
