Plane Crash Claims 18 Lives

A military airplane with 18 people on board crashed Thursday morning while flying from Dire Dawa to Bishoftu in East Shewa zone. Bishoftu is located approximately 100Km from the capital and is the main base of the Ethiopian Air Force.

An investigation is launched to determine the cause of the incident, according to Aschalew Alemu, the zone’s police public relations head. The plane caught on fire before it fully crashed into the ground.

Bodies of all the deceased have been recovered, according to Aschalew. The casualties include 15 members of the military and three civilians.

Back in 2013, an Ethiopian military cargo plane crashed in Mogadishu, killing four crew members.
