Tigray Regional State is preparing to build an irrigation dam on Yekaza River for a total cost of six billion Birr.
The irrigation will be used to harvest 10,000ht of land and help 30,000 farmers to harvest twice a year.
“The farmers will supply inputs for the Agro-Industrial sector by using an irrigation scheme,” said Tatere Hadush of the water irrigation supply directorate at the Tigray Water Resource Bureau.
The Bureau has completed a feasibility study over the past three years. Beside irrigation, the dam will serve a fishery and recreational purpose, according to Tatere.
“Water is the main factor to achieve the economic goal’s of the region,” says Eyassu Yazew (PhD), Water and Environmental Institute director.
