The Dam Conference

Demeke Mekonnen, deputy prime minister of Ethiopia, and Simegnew Bekele, project manager of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), were some of the attendees at the annual conference for the ninth National Council for the Coordination of Public Participation on the GERD that was held at Capital Hotel, on Haile Gebrselassie Avenue, on August 2, 2017. Demeke also doubles as chairman of the Council.

People from all over the country have expressed support for the Dam, which is located in Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State and is intended to generate six thousand megawatts of power for the country. The Dam is also expected to bring foreign currency if hopes of exporting power to other East African countries are realised.

So, it makes sense a Council dedicated to the coordination of public participation is set up to help in the mobilization of funds for the construction of the GERD. The Office is especially important as the Dam is being funded without any input from donor countries or international financial institutions. The Council’s main objective is to create a national spirit leading to the construction of the Dam. It is accountable to the Parliament.

Since its establishment, the Council claims to have collected over 10 billion Br of the 80 billion Br that is needed to complete the Dam. Within the just-ended fiscal year, close to 1.5 billion Br was collected from a targeted 1.8 billion Br. The Council plans to collect 1.4 billion Br in the next fiscal year.
