Viettel Telecom Group Eyes Ethiopia

Vietnam’s state-owned telecom company, Viettel Group, announced its interest in exploring business opportunities in Ethiopia following Ethiopia’s announced intention to liberalise key economic sectors including telecommunications.

The government announced last month it plans to open up Ethiopian Airlines, Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Service Enterprise and Ethiopian Electric Power to private investment.

Viettel currently operates or holds licenses to operate in African markets including Mozambique, Burundi, Cameroon and Tanzania.

Other foreign telecom companies that have expressed interest in one of Africa’s last remaining monopoly markets include Johannesburg-listed MTN and France’s Orange.
