WorldRemit Connects with Awash Bank

Awash Bank signs an agreement with WorldRemit, a service that allows people to send and receive money online.

The partnership is expected to ease cash transfers to Ethiopia for the diaspora community with instant remittance service to the bank’s two million customers and 366 cash pick-up locations in Ethiopia.

The new partnership allows Ethiopians living in over 50 countries – including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada – to send money instantly using WorldRemit’s mobile app and website.

Sharon Karuga, regional director of East & Central Africa at WorldRemit says, “our service will give the Ethiopian diaspora more choice and additional pickup locations across Ethiopia to make sending money back home easy.”

Remittances were recorded at over four billion dollars in 2015/16 but stagnated the following year.
