Court Grants Suspect on Fed Probe Bail Release

Judges at the 10th Criminal Bench of the Federal High Court released Essayas Dagnew, former chief operating officer of Ethio telecom, against a bond of 200,000 Br.

The judges stated that the police have failed to make progress in their investigations in due time and that there is no reason to keep Esayas in custody anymore. Essayas, a brother of Kinfe, former head of Metals & Engineering Corporation (MetEC) was suspected of rewriting project contracts for mobile and CDMA network sites construction in the Somali and Oromia regional states in favour of MetEC as well as awarding the military industrial complex a tower construction project valued at 312.7 million Br.

He first appeared before a federal court on November 15, 2018, after having been arrested the previous day, and has been kept in jail since without bail.
