Mesenbet Becomes First Female President of City Chamber

ROLLING COVERAGE 5.31PM: Mesenbet Shenkute, former president of Abay Bank, becomes the first female president of the Addis Abeba Chamber of Commerce & Sectoral Association by winning  419 votes.

Selahedin Kelifa, president of Ethiopian Freight Forwarders & Shipping Agents Association, was the runner-up with 276 votes.

The Association has also elected Abebaw Mekonnen as vice president along with nine board directors.

 

4.17pm: Two well known business personalities, Mesenbet Shenkute, former president of Abay Bank, and Selahedin Kelifa, president of Ethiopian Freight Forwarders & Shipping Agents Association, are running for presidency of the Addis Abeba Chamber of Commerce & Sectoral Association.

The President, to be announced in hours, will replace Elias Geneti, who served the metropolitan trade lobby for two terms in a row. The committee formed for the election process is counting the votes from the members of the chamber.

The Association, which has 16,000-plus members, is holding its General Assembly meeting at the Intercontinental Hotel in Addis Abeba. During the morning session, the general assembly elected 14 board directors.

The outgoing President, Elias founded Agro Prom International Plc., a company that imports agricultural products. He has been serving as the board chairperson of the Oromia Insurance Company since 2014.
