After Fiery Debate, Parliament Establishes Border, Identity Commission

Federal legislators have approved the establishment of a Border & Identity Affairs Commission after a charged debate among MPs.

The establishment of the commission drew votes in favour from the 350 MPs with 33 voting against its creation and four abstentions.

“Why would we establish a commission which does not give a decision,” an MP, Mana Atsebeha of the TPLF asked. “Solving the current problem through such measures is dangerous.”

The commission will be responsible for investigating border and identity questions and present reports for the House of Federation’s decision. It would help in responding to questions involving the border and identity, according to Getachew Melese, an MP from ADP.

“The House has not addressed the question for long,” he said. “The commission will help in getting an immediate response now.”

Parliament also approved the amended proclamation of defense during today’s assembly. The proclamation put an age ceiling of 45 for defense staff. It also states that members of the defense force who served the nation for a long time will be given a house in Addis Abeba, in honor of their service. The proclamation was approved with one abstention.
