Fed. Investigators Wind Up Probe on MetEC Suspects

Investigators from the Federal Police told judges today that they have concluded a probe on 11 former senior executives of Metals & Engineering Corporation (MetEC) who have been detained under suspicion of grand corruption.

Four investigators of the Federal Police Commission have transferred the cases to federal prosecutors who are expected to be press charges in two weeks.

Arrested on the first week of November this year, 26 officials from MetEC are suspected of grand corruption involving 37 billion Br in local and international procurements.

In the previous three sessions, police have appealed for 14-day custody rights to investigate the allegations against the suspects. The three judges of the Federal High Court’s Lideta Division have allowed police to finalise the investigation, keeping the suspects under custody since.

Tena Kurunde (Brig. Gen), Mulu W. Gebriel (Col.), Hadgu G. Giorgis (Brig. General), Azeb Tadesse (Col.), are among the suspects. They have appealed for bail rights, which was rejected by the judges, who gave the prosecutors 15 days to press charges and adjourned the case to January 13, 2019.

The CEO of MetEC, Kinfe Dagnew (Maj. Gen.), and a dozen other suspects have their cases still in the hands of federal investigators.
